Better College Decisions, Admissions Advice & Application Data We asked the admission staff to select some of their favorite essays. We hope they will provide inspiration as you craft your stories. You can write about pretty much anything â" an experience, an inanimate object, a movie, a place, a person â" as long as your essay reveals how that experience, thing, movie, place, or person made an impact on you. Such writing asks the writer to be more creative about the way phrases and sentences are worded. Once youâve hooked the reader, switch gears a little to set up the essay in a way appropriate for an introduction. The introduction needs to set up the whole essay. It should establish for the reader a sense of expectation for whatâs to come without giving it all away. Jager-Hyman uses Mad Libs to help students find their own language to express their thoughts. Rachel, a devoted dog-lover, has volunteered at rescue organizations in three different countries, andâ"surprise, surpriseâ"the family has ended up adopting three dogs. Rachel could write the story of adopting each dog and how important volunteering was to her, while throwing in colorful details that illustrate her familiarity with each country. Perhaps most important, this is an essay Rachel canât wait to write. She decides against the âgetting lostâ story, as it happened when she was 8; although if she could find a metaphoric connection with feeling lost and found when moving to different countries, it could work. Likewise, she was 10 years old when Maroon Five came to the Dominican Republic, where her dad was the cultural attaché. Relate to the reader the full scope of an experience â" sights, sounds, and maybe even smells. Be careful, however, not to overuse imagery; otherwise the essay may sound forced, unnatural and give the reader the impression you are trying too hard to be creative. DO write about what you know and have observed or experienced, not things beyond your personal development as a teenager. Book knowledge or secondhand information does not convey to the reader any sense of who you are. The fewer words you can use to relay your message, the better. Rachel now realizes she should do more research on her colleges. She will need to find specific classes to cite, professors sheâs familiar with, and extracurriculars she will take part in. She will try to fit this research in while traveling. She will start the essay with a snapshot of a childrenâs Halloween party that she and other embassy teens organized, then discuss being a volunteer monitor for an online local TCK community. Sheâll end with her plan to forge new bonds with other international kids, mentioning specific clubs or houses at each university.
